Arizona's 98th Statehood Day Celebration

Coordinated by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, the Statehood Day program was observed on February 11, 2010, in the Capitol’s historic Senate Chamber. The ceremony was emceed by Secretary of State Ken Bennett.

Statehood Day Ceremony
The Trevor G. Browne Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps presented the colors, after which former legislator Phil Hanson led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary of State Bennett read a Proclamation from Governor Jan Brewer commemorating the day.

Secretary of State Bennett recognized Denise Lundin, Clerk of the Cochise Superior Court, and Evelyn Johnson, Executive Director of the Cave Creek Museum, both of whom are digitizing historic documents for the Arizona Memory Project.

State Librarian GladysAnn Wells, President of the Capitol Museum Guild Dee Steen, and President of the Friends of Arizona Archives Doug Kupel surprised Assistant Secretary of State Jim Drake by presenting the Polly Award to him.

During the final portion of the program, Secretary of State Bennett recognized the 11 student winners of the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest. The contest is sponsored by the Arizona Educational Foundation and APS. After the ceremony, the students met with Secretary Bennett and read their winning entries in the Director’s Office Conference Room.
