Arizona's 96th Statehood Day Celebration
and
The 9th Annual Museums on the Mall
February 14, 2008


Coordinated by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records and the Arizona Humanities Council. Sponsored by Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arizona Museum of Natural History, Central Arizona Museum Association, Museum Association of Arizona, Phoenix Airport Museum, Pueblo Grande Museum, and Sharlot Hall Museum.

Museums on the Mall
Nearly forty museums and heritage centers from around the state had table-top displays of exhibits and artifacts for public view on the Senate Lawn. Some hosted historic re-enactors and craft persons for hands-on activities and demonstrations to help commemorate the state’s heritage.

Statehood Day Ceremony
The Statehood Day program in the Capitol’s historic Senate Chamber, emceed by Betsy Bayless, featured Governor Napolitano reading the Statehood Day Proclamation to mark Arizona’s 96th birthday.

Chief Justice Ruth V. McGregor led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Senate President Tim Bee recognized the student winners of the annual Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest were recognized for their work on this year’s topic, “How the Character of Arizona’s Youth Affects Arizona’s Future.” Representative Bob Robson presented the Polly Rosenbaum Award to long-time legislator Brenda Burns.

The State Library Opened Two New Exhibits

• “Up from the Ashes: Phoenix Goes to Mars”
2nd Floor, Arizona State Capitol Museum, in collaboration with The University of Arizona

This exhibit highlights The University of Arizona’s Phoenix Mars Mission, from project development, launch, touchdown and the resulting research.
• “The Carnegie: Behind Every Library There Is a Story”
Carnegie Center, 1101 W. Washington

The historic Carnegie Library turned 100 years on February 14, 2008. Established in 1908, it was the first permanent library building in Phoenix and its longevity is symbolic of the importance of libraries in our communities. This permanent exhibit tells its story.
