Happy Birthday Arizona - Statehood Day 2008

Arizona celebrated the 96th anniversary of Arizona Statehood on Thursday, February 14 at the State Capitol in downtown Phoenix.

In an Old Senate Chamber ceremony launching Arizona's 96th Birthday Celebration, Governor Janet Napolitano issued a proclamation recognizing Statehood Day.  The DPS Honor Guard presented the Colors and Chief Justice Ruth McGregor led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Mistress of Ceremonies Betsey Bayless, former Secretary of State, welcomed participants.

Senate President Tim Bee announced winners of the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest.  Speaker Pro Tempore Bob Robson presented the Polly Award on behalf of Speaker Jim Weiers.

Brenda Burns

The Honorable Brenda Burns, first woman President of the Arizona State Senate, received the award from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.  It is given annually in Polly Rosenbaum's memory to a public official, not on the current Library Board, who has significantly supported the work of the Library and Archives' statewide cultural mission.

GladysAnn Wells, State Library Director, said Burns' selection was the result of her support for the State Library's work with legislative partners; initiation of the Electronic Reference Service; service on the Library Board; support of a cost recovery fee for the storage and servicing of records in the Records Management Center; and most recently, for her skillful leadership as Chairman of the Capitol Task Force.
