Map Collection


Arizona Territory-1865 by William B. Hartley This is an important collection of historical and contemporary geographic, nautical, topographic and transportation maps of Arizona. The collection also includes maps of the United States and the world. You may identify items in the Collection by using the Library and Archives' online catalog and selecting "maps" as the location, but the maps do NOT circulate. There are currently NO digitized maps in the Collection.

Polly Rosenbaum State Archives and History Building
NOTE: The Library’s historic and unique collection of Arizona maps has moved to the Polly Rosenbaum State Archives and History Building. The building is located at 1901 W. Madison Street in Phoenix, near the State Capitol, and will allow for better humidity, temperature and dust control for the preservation of this unique collection for many years to come. The Maps Librarian is located in the Polly Rosenbaum Building as well, to assist users with maps and geographic materials from the agency’s collections.

Arizona Maps and Other Resources

The Map Collection focuses primarily on Arizona, from the earliest territorial period to the present. It includes historic and contemporary topographic maps, government maps of the territory and state and a wide variety of county and city maps from the territorial era to the present. The Collection is strong in maps showing the irrigation and urban development of the Salt River Valley and Phoenix from the 1890's to the present and irrigation along the Colorado River. There are also maps of mining districts and detailed maps of railroad right-of-ways.

Federal Maps and Other Resources

The Map Collection, along with the Federal Publications Collection, participates in the Federal Depository Library Program. The Map Collection is the regional federal map collection for Arizona and receives topographic maps for all 50 states, nautical and aeronautical charts for the entire world, a wide variety of federal mapping showing national forests, wilderness areas and public lands throughout the United States and Central Intelligence Agency maps for all countries of the world.
