Library Practitioner Certification
Core competencies have been developed as part of the “Continuum of Library Education” project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. In using these core competencies, it is important to recognize that they relate to the role of library practitioners to help individuals understand job requirements and develop realistic expectations of the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed for library practitioners. The Library Practitioner Certification is for library practitioners who do not have a degree in library science and would like recognition for participation in professional development to enhance job performance
The core competency categories include:
- Foundation
- Administration
- Services
- Collections
- Technology
The general guidelines for applying for the certification include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2,000 hours of library work, unpaid or paid, within five years of application
- 162 Contact Hours in specific competencies (see the certification application for this list)
- Renewals are required every three years and require additional 45 Contact Hours
- Courses taken within five years of the date of application are eligible for certification purposes.
