Arizona Public Library Statistics

The Arizona State Library collects, edits and disseminates statistical information on public libraries in the state. This information is shared with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is part of a national effort to collect library data.  For more information, email Laura Stone.

Library Visits:  Arizonans visited their public libraries 24.6 million times in 2006-07, or more than 2 million times per month. In comparison, 2.5 million people attended a Diamondback game in 2008; 755,302 attended a Suns game; 607,638 attended a Coyotes game, and 516,646 attended a Cardinals game (2007).

Internet Usage:  There are 3,600 computers in public libraries that connect to the internet.  Almost 5 million uses were noted in 2006-07.

Books Borrowed:  Arizonans borrowed almost 45 million items from their libraries, 7.1 items for each person in the state. In comparison, the average American attends the movies 6 times each year.

Library Cardholders:  There were 3,647,405 registered library cardholders in Arizona 2006-07. In comparison, 3,070,654 Arizonans had voter registration cards in January, 2009; 2,320,861 voted in November, 2008.

Library Collections: There are 200 public library buildings in Arizona. They hold 9 million books; 560,000 audio materials, and 644,00 videos. More than 50 rural Arizona communities have no bookstore. There are no bookstores in all of Greenlee and LaPaz counties.
