What you really need to know, what you can ignore, and even when you don’t need to catalog. Just the practical things with enough of the “why?” to make sense of it all. Plus, what you already know about cataloging and didn’t even realize! Melissa Powell teaches Basic Cataloging Skills for Lyrasis, and the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) and conducts cataloging training for the AspenCat Union Catalog, (Koha-based ILS). Additionally she is the Webcast Producer for Publisher's Weekly, and the Editor of the Biblio Tech Review, an international library technology newsletter. She received a B.A in History and a Masters in Library and Information Studies at Northern Illinois University and has additional training in coaching and communications. Resource Description Access (RDA) is a fancy way of saying “we have a bunch of new rules for cataloging”. What is different about this change? Lots and a lot of it actually makes sense! Do you need to worry about it? Yes and no. Yes, because there are some fundamental changes that will make your life easier, and No, because everyone is making the changes all over the world so others are doing a lot of the work for you.
