Arizona Convocation 2000
March 5-6, 2000
I invite you to attend Convocation 2000 in Phoenix, March 5-6. This meeting
offers representatives from Arizona libraries, archives, and museums,
along with historians, genealogists, and affiliated professionals, a
forum to continue the good work begun at last year's convocations in
Sierra Vista, Prescott, and Globe.
Last year we had a chance to get to know each other and to learn about
each other's collections and programs. We heard about some of the challenges
we all face. We began discovering ways that we can collaborate to help
us overcome those challenges.
Although we represent many different types of repositories and come
from different disciplines, we have at least one common purpose. We seek
to preserve our cultural heritage. We can accomplish that goal only if
we work together, as each repository holds a piece of that heritage.
I believe that libraries, archives, and museums have different traditions,
each with their particular strengths. As we seek new and better ways
to do our jobs, we should consider the best that each discipline has
to offer. What may be a new approach to one of us may be an established
tradition for our colleagues.
The principal goal of the convocation is to strengthen the community
of individuals responsible for and dedicated to our cultural heritage.
Breakout sessions will help us discover what we have in common. Elizabeth
Burden, Public Information Officer for Tucson-Pima Public Libraries,
will talk about marketing our services. Will Phillips, founder of management
consulting firm Qm2, will talk about staff and collaborative projects.
Finally, we'll revisit the work of the Statewide Task Forces on Cooperative
Collection Development, Resource Sharing, and Preservation. We'll have
an opportunity to discuss issues and ideas with members of the Statewide
Library Development Commission.
Please join us for Convocation 2000. We are providing the meeting materials,
and registration includes the banquet dinner Sunday night, and breakfast
and lunch on Monday. We hope that this no-cost conference registration
package will encourage broad participation. We've also arranged a special
rate of $53 (plus tax) per night at the Phoenix Crowne Plaza Metrocenter,
where Convocation 2000 is being held.
Don't delay! Please return the enclosed form by January 31 to guarantee
a "place at the table" and the special hotel rate. Late registrations
will be accepted as space permits.
