The votes are in – the ONEBOOKAZ adult title for 2008 is THESE IS MY WORDS by Nancy E. Turner (AZC2519 and BR12317). Inspired by the author’s family memoirs, Sarah’s diary portrays the joys and hardships of living out west at the end of the 1800s. Beginning at age 17, she recounts events over 20 years including Indian attacks, marriages, births and deaths.
For young readers DANGER IN THE DESERT by Terri Fields (AZC2316) is the story of Scott and Robbie, eleven and nine, who are inadvertently kidnapped when their Mom’s car is stolen. They are abandoned in the Arizona desert with no food or water. The brothers are forced to put aside their bickering and work together to survive. GR 3-7.
The kickoff for ONEBOOKAZ will be April 12, 2008. For details about the program and related events go to www.onebookaz.org.
Brought to Arizona in 2002, and coordinated by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, ONEBOOKAZ is an exciting program that brings communities together through literature. Beginning in April every year, this program encourages communities across the State of Arizona to read the same book at the same time and participate in discussions and programs centered around that book.
An exciting new goal has been added to help Arizonans read their way to the upcoming State Centennial. Beginning in 2007 and continuing through 2012, all the ONEBOOKS for adults and kids will center on Arizona topics and themes.
