Tucson Society of the Blind is a non-profit organization that serves visually impaired seniors by providing recreational, social and educational programs.  TSB meets every Tuesday at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 East Broadway, just east of Wilmot from 10 am-2 pm.  TSB helps seniors find resources and information, provides emotional support, guest speakers, field trips, luncheons, crafts, bingo, and fun.  For information call Janna at 520-886-1913 or Barbara at 520-298-2427.

The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Adaptive Recreation Service, will offer three river rafting adventures this summer on the San Juan River in Utah for youth between the ages of 14 and 20, with and without disabilities.  The Library has a few applications on hand and available to you on request, or for more information call 602-262-4543 (voice) or 602-534-2491 (TTY).

Associated Services for the Blind has announced the grand opening of an online Braille bookstore.  The ASB Braille Bookstore has nine categories and over 100 books ready for sale and they expect to eventually build to over 300 books in their catalog.  Most books cost between $15 and $35 and are shipped to you free matter.  All the books are proofread and transcribed by certified Braille transcribers and proofreaders.  If you want to give a book as a gift the bookstore will include a brief message of your choice in print and Braille in the package.  You can find the bookstore at www.asb.org/bookstore.htm.

The Southern Arizona Association for the Visually Impaired wants you to know that scholarships that can be applied to tuition, supplies, books and adaptive equipment are available to visually impaired residents of Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham or Greenlee counties for the Fall, 2006 semester.  Scholarship awards will be based on financial need, ability and seriousness of educational effort.  One of the scholarships also stipulates that the applicant utilize a guide dog or animal in daily activities.  For more information contact SAAVI at 3767 E. Home Readers is a non-profit organization that records the catalogs of various mail order companies, such as the Vermont Country Store, Figi’s, Avon, and many others.  Most of the catalogs are free, but a few require a small payment.  If you are interested in seeing the complete list of catalogs available please call 1-877-814-7323.  The office hours for Home Readers are Monday 10 am to 7:30 pm Central Time; Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4:30 pm Central time.  You may also visit their web site at www.homereaders.com.
