Those interested in math have a new listserv available to them. The group is a place where interested persons can discuss all issues related to blindness and math, including sources for accessible texts, information about tactile and auditory graphing programs, suggestions for ensuring that math lectures are accessible to blind students, and strategies used by blind math instructors. The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Adaptive Recreation Services is offering outdoor adventure programs for teens and adults with disabilities during March and April. You may also inquire about the upcoming spring and summer activities which will include kayaking, adaptive cycling, wilderness camping, adaptive ice skating and sled hockey.
Cingular Wireless is offering TALKS, speech-enabling software that turns the Nokia 6620 handset into a talking mobile phone. The software is stored on a multi media card that is inserted into the phone and then runs in the background and translates screens, keystrokes, menu selections, etc. into speech output that is audible via the handset speaker or a connected headset. We have a 72 volume Braille Webster’s New World Dictionary from 1981 that we will give to anyone who will pick it up here at the Library. Just let us know when you’re coming and we’ll have it ready for you.
