Arizona Summer Reading Program 2002

"Books and Pets: Our Friends for Life"
Get ready to have the summer of a lifetime for kids of all ages and your favorite crazy, cuddly pets when you join the Arizona reading program at your local library. You will keep track of your books and win prizes. Participating libraries have ordered posters, bookmarks, book bags, book logs, participation certificates, and paw print stamps, as well as an array of other materials, to use for reading rewards this summer.

We encourage everyone to contact your public or tribal library so you can participate in the Arizona Summer Reading Program.

You will receive information and promotional materials throughout the summer months for the reading program.

Treats for kids and pets: Doggie bone eats for kids

Materials:
Sliced Bread
Peanut Butter
Bread Knife
Dog bone cookie cutter
Optional jelly

Directions:

  1. Spread slices of bread with the peanut butter or other filling material.
  2. After sandwich is made, use cookie cutter to shape sandwich into edible doggie bone.

Doggie bones for dogs

1/3 C margarine, softened
1/2 C powdered milk
1 egg, beaten
3 C whole wheat flour
3/4 C hot water or meat juices

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

In a large bowl, pour hot water over margarine. Stir in powdered milk and egg. Add flour, ½ cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Knead 3 to 4 minutes, adding more flour if necessary to make dough very stiff. Pat or roll to ½ inch thickness and cut out with dog biscuit cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 30 to 50 minutes. Allow to cool and dry until hard. A doggie's dream.


If you live in the Valley, the Arizona Republic and the Arizona Diamondbacks present this years summer reading program Read Your way to the Ballpark from May 28th through July 27th. Kids can sign-up at any of the participating libraries below and receive the information needed to participate.

The Telephone Pioneer Pool is a public, City of Phoenix aquatic facility designed and designated for people with special needs and their family and friends.


Braille Encyclopedia articles for students

Seedlings, Inc., provides free articles from the World Book Encyclopedia in braille for students.

This has proven to be a very popular service for students who need information for their projects and book reports. Articles for first grade through senior level may be ordered by writing to Seedlings at PO Box 51924, Livonia, Mi 48151- 5924; or call 1-800-777-8552.

Descriptive Videos

The Braille and Talking Book Library now offers descriptive videos that may be borrowed. Patrons in good standing may borrow only one video at a time for a two week checkout period. Remember, we are limited in the number of videos we have.

Described videos have a second audio track with a narrator's voice decribing the action on the screen during the breaks in the dialog and sound effects.
