NATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Letters About Literature is a national reading-writing contest for students. The Center for the Book in partnership with Target Stores invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre-- fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic – explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves.
There are three competition levels: Level I for students in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8, and Level III, grades 9 - 12. Winners receive cash awards at the national and state levels.
Arizona students and teachers are encouraged to participate by sending letters directly to the Center for the Book. The Arizona Center for the Book reads and judges the semi-finalist letters and determines the winners in each age category.

NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVALhttp://www.loc.gov/bookfest/
The National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, is held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between 7th and 14th streets.
The Arizona Center for the Book participates in the Pavilion of the States where attendees learn about the reading and literacy promotion projects as well as the literary traditions of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. Representatives from throughout the nation provide information and answer questions about their state's writers, libraries, book festivals, book awards and reading promotion activities. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) collaborate to support the efforts of state libraries to participate in the festival.
