The mission of the Arizona Educational Foundation is to improve education
by focusing resources from the private sector to promote, recognize
and reward excellence in K-12 public education in Arizona. It was founded
in 1983 by then State Superintendent of Public Instruction Carolyn
Warner, Bashas'' CEO Eddie Basha, and retired Arizona Republic community
relations manager Bill Shover. Programs include:
The A+ School Recognition Program recognizes and rewards elementary and secondary public schools throughout Arizona that demonstrate overall excellence in the following areas of education: student focus; school organization; challenging curriculum; active teaching and learning; professional community; leadership; community partnerships; and assessment. The award validates a school''s effectiveness, unifies a school community, and instills a sense of pride.
The Arizona Teacher of the Year Program is the only statewide program that spotlights the contributions of Arizona''s teachers. The program annually recognizes ten exceptionally skilled and dedicated pre-kindergarten through 12th Grade public school teachers who have gained the respect and admiration of students, parents, and co-workers. Honored teachers play an active and useful role in their communities as well as their schools, distinguishing themselves as leaders.
The Arizona Spelling Bee is an annual event that challenges children in grades K-8 to utilize their spelling and phonetic skills in a competitive environment. The winner of the State Spelling Bee becomes Arizona''s sole representative to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. each June. Arizona''s Spelling Bee Champion and chaperone receive an expenses-paid trip to the week-long Spelling Bee event in Washington.
The Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest promotes creative writing skills for students in grades 7 – 12. Each year a different topic is selected on which students must write their essays. Students are judged on a number of criteria including originality, creativity, and style. Students who submit winning essays are recognized at by elected officials at the State Capitol on Statehood Day in February.

The Reading Arizona Program provides technical and material resources
that help public and tribal librarians plan, promote, and implement
reading programs for children and young adults during out-of-school
periods. The program helps maintain and often increase the reading
skills of students during out-of-school times, providing life-long
literacy and reading benefits, as well as more immediate school preparedness.
In addition, when librarians invite the community into the library,
the program helps both children and their parents become more comfortable
with the library setting and more knowledgeable about library services.
The program, sponsored by the Library Development Division of the Arizona
State Library, Archives and Public Records, provides a free planning
and resource manual to all interested public and tribal libraries,
as well as free and priced promotional and incentive items based on
a yearly theme.

A cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind Act signed by President Bush
in January 2002 is the Reading First initiative, the largest and yet
most focused early reading initiative this country has ever undertaken.
Reading First funds are dedicated to help states and local school districts
prevent reading difficulties by establishing high-quality comprehensive
reading instruction by well-trained teachers in kindergarten through
grade three. Targeted for the K-3 classroom, Reading First provides
an opportunity for every state to work with its districts to ensure
that teachers'' instructional practice reflects scientific research,
to implement programs based on this research, and to use rigorous assessments
with proven validity and reliability that effectively screen, diagnose
and monitor the progress of all students.
AZ READS is a comprehensive plan of the Arizona Department of Education
aimed at improving reading achievement in Arizona. It challenges Arizonans
to participate in a statewide collaborative effort to make this vision
a reality: that every Arizona child will learn to read proficiently
by third grade and remain a proficient reader through the twelfth grade.
With reading as the foundation of our efforts to raise student achievement,
children will be prepared to succeed in school, in the workplace, and
in life.
Books for Arizona Libraries
The Books for Arizona Libraries program provides funding for Arizona's smaller libraries and literacy groups to acquire quality, appropriate books from large library systems' book sales at no cost. For details on how to participate, see www.lib.az.us/BAZL.

BookPALS is a national all-volunteer literacy program sponsored by
the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. The mission of BookPALS is to bring
stories to life, making reading fun and enjoyable so that children
will want to read for themselves. BookPALS also seeks grants and donations
from the community for special programs and to get books into the hands
of children. BookPALS is founded on a very clear premise: In order
for children to learn to read — especially if they are non-native
English speakers, or are not read to at home — they must experience
the magic of books and develop a love for reading. The art of story
telling is an actor''s craft... no one brings life to a book better
than an actor.
BookPALS Arizona puts performing artists into hi-risk schools to read
to classes of children on a weekly basis. It just takes one hour a
week of a performing artist’s time to make a BIG difference in
children''s lives.
Book Sale Finder – Arizona
http://www.booksalefinder.com/AZ.html
Most of the book sales listed are run by non-profit organizations around
the country. The majority are sponsored by Friends of the Library volunteer
groups who hold the sales to raise funds for such things as local cultural
activities and book purchases for the library. There are also many
other non-profit groups who either run bookstores or sponsor regular
sales for general fundraising.
Book Sale Finder does not charge any non-profit organization to list
their sale or bookstore on its web page. They also allow book fair
organizations and for-profit book dealers to advertise their sales
as well.
Big sales are highlighted in a six-month calendar. Box sales in Arizona
bookstores and libraries that are ongoing include:

Knowledge River, the Center for the Study of Hispanic and Native American
Information Issues at the University of Arizona School of Information
Resources and Library Science (SIRLS) has received a grant from the
W.K. Kellogg Foundation to help spread the word on El Día de
los Niños/El Día de los Libros, a special holiday. April
30 th, that honors all children by encouraging them to read about and
celebrate their culture and those of others. Inspired by the
work of author Pat Mora who is El Día de los Niños/El
Día de los Libros’ national champion, many libraries throughout
the country are starting to have annual events that bring children
and books together using multicultural themes. Knowledge River’s
charge is to connect people with resources and information that promote
the ideals and goals of El Día de los Niños/El Día
de los Libros.
El día de los niños/El día de los libros: a celebration
of children, families, and reading is held annually on April 30. The
celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for every
child regardless of linguistic and cultural background. Through a $80,000
grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Association for Library
Service for Children (ALSC) expects to increase public awareness of
the event in libraries throughout the country. ALSC is collaborating
on this effort with the National Association to Promote Library and
Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking (REFORMA).
Family Place – Arizona
http://www.lff.org/programs/family.html
The Family Place Arizona is an affiliate of the national Family Place program. Family Place consists of a network of children''s librarians nationwide who believe that literacy begins at birth, and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families. The Parent/Child Workshop, a five-week program for kids ages 1-3 and their caregivers that features toys and books and art supplies for kids, as well as professionals from community agencies who can answer caregivers'' questions about their children;
Outreach to families and caregivers; A multimedia early-childhood collection that includes books, videos, toys and computers; A multimedia parenting collection for caregivers and early childhood professionals; and A Family Place coalition of local leaders and related professionals who steer families to the library, advise the library on programming, and advocate for the library in other arenas.

Reach Out and Read (ROR) – Arizona
REACH Out and Read is a national non-profit program that builds on the special relationship between doctors and the parents of young children to support children''s language and literacy development. At well-child visits, from 6 mo. to 5 yrs., doctors and nurses provide information about the importance of reading aloud and give new, developmentally appropriate books to the children to take home. In the waiting room, volunteers read to children, modeling techniques for parents.
REACH Out and Read has provided the link between literacy and a healthy childhood to millions of children nationally since 1989. Special focus is on children growing up in poverty. Reach Out and Read reinforces the parent''s role as the first and most important teacher, and gives parents the tools and techniques to help their children succeed.
