Dr. Melanie Sturgeon


History and Archives Division Director



Melanie Sturgeon has a Masters of Arts in Public History and a Ph.D. in History from Arizona State University. She came to the agency in 1996 as the Deputy State Archivist and became the Director of the History and Archives Division in 2001.

Melanie has served as the President of the Southwest Oral History Association (SOHA), the Coordinating Committee for History in Arizona (CCHA), the Arizona Paper and Photographic Conservation Group (APPCG) and the Conference of Intermountain Archivists (CIMA). She received the SOHA Service Award in 2003 and in 2007 Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano recognized Melanie for her excellent service as a state employee.
