Biographical Note

Elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1994, Mark Anderson, a Republican, served District 29 in western Mesa.  He chaired the Human Services Committee, and was instrumental in developing Arizona’s welfare reform legislation in the 1997 and 1998 sessions.  Anderson was also the prime sponsor of the nation’s first tuition tax credit bill for private and public schools passed in 1997.

Other important bills Anderson sponsored include: a charity tax credit for donors to private non-profit groups helping low-income citizens; a $2 million dollar appropriation for abstinence-only education; a $1 million dollar appropriation for a counseling and mentoring program for young fathers; and, a program that encourages churches to assist in the placement of foster children in their communities.

Anderson has consistently sponsored and supported pro-marriage and anti-pornography legislation, including the covenant marriage bill passed in 1998, and a bill to restrict minors’ access to pornography on the Internet in public schools and libraries.  Most recently, Representative Anderson was the prime sponsor of legislation allocating $1.5 million dollars for marriage skills training courses to be offered by community-based organizations and a media campaign to promote healthy marriage and the need for marriage preparation.

He served as co-chair of the Welfare Reform Joint Committee and Task Force, which oversees implementation of welfare reform legislation and identifies areas to be addressed in future legislation.

Anderson owns a travel and marketing business, is married, and has three children.
