Yuma County

| Yuma County was the third county created by the first Territorial Legislature in 1864. It was named for the Yuma Indians. La Paz was the first county seat. An act approved January 26, 1871, changed the county seat to Arizona City which later became the City of Yuma. |

Clerk of the Board reports, 1899-1930, are the monthly, quarterly and annual reports filed by the Clerk of the Board. The reports list expenses of the County as well as monies received by the Board. Appointments, resignations, requests, oaths and bonds, 1872-1937, deal with county officials and other personnel matters. Resolutions and ordinances, 1910-1932, contain resolutions passed by the Board and ordinances proposed by the City. Correspondence and reports, 1897-1946, has the most variety of record types. This group documents many of the activities of the Board such as overseeing the budget, county officials and county facilities.
Budgets, 1919-1938, contain budget estimates, school census statistics, worksheets and assessment papers. County property inventories, 1871-1912, are lists of county-owned property in the hands of officials. It includes a map of the Mohawk Valley. Franchises, 1909-1964, are franchise papers that document the development of public utilities in the county.
Districts, 1913-1961, contain petitions, correspondence, election results, maps, minutes, articles of incorporation and dissolution papers that document the water, irrigation and power districts in the county. Agreements, bonds and contracts, 1871-1937, contain bonds, contracts, reports and agreements that document the financing and building of county facilities. |

Included in these files are assessment lists for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and early telephone companies in Yuma. District Attorney files, 1871-1938, include petitions, opinions, juror lists, affidavits and tax lists. County Physician and Hospital records, 1904-1945, include physicians' reports, hospital reports and a pediatric night orders log. Indigent applications, 1910-1928, are affidavits from indigents requesting assistance. County Farm records, 1910-1923, contain reports, indigent affidavits and stock lists. Health and Welfare minutes, 1907-1917, are in two folders and include the Board of Health and the Board of Child Welfare.
Justice of the Peace, Coroner and Constable files, 1891-1931, are precinct reports listing activities for each month. Some quarterly and annual reports are also included. Not all precincts are available for all years. Recorder's Office files, 1898-1932, include reports, correspondence and election files. Reports are quarterly and monthly. Correspondence is in one folder. Election files include proclamations, rolls of electors, expense statements of candidates, nomination papers, statehood election correspondence, petitions and canvass results.
Sheriff's Office records, 1897-1931, are reports, license reports, jailor reports and reports of prisoner meals. Most reports are monthly. Quarterly jailor reports list all prisoners in the jail. Superintendent of School files, 1898-1932, include reports and school files which document the boundaries and activities of the county's school districts.
Superior Court files, 1870-1931, include monthly Clerk of the Court reports, jury lists and warrants. Jury lists and warrants include jury fees, lists and reports. County Surveyor and Public Roads, 1881-1955, contains reports on roads, including petitions, cost estimates, reports, specifications, blueprints and design memoranda for the design and construction of the Painted Rock Reservoir.
Treasurer's Office records, 1875-1943, include Treasurers' reports, Examiners' reports, tax deeds and warrants and accounts. Original instruments, 1864-1949, include butchers bonds, marks and brands, water location notices, liens, contracts, wills, appointments, mining claims, survey field notes, deeds, homesteads, mortgages, reports of birth and death, marriage certificates, pension vouchers and applications for leasing school lands. |
