Pinal County
Pinal County was created February 1, 1875, as the sixth county. It
was formed from parts of Pima, Maricopa and Yavapai counties and
named for the Pinal Indians. The county seat is located in Florence.
SG 1. Assessor

This volume is an original assessment roll and is indexed. Arranged
alphabetically.
SG 3. Coroner
Inquests. 1884-1929. 2 c.f. (2

Inquests or Coroners' jury reports are filed alphabetically by deceased's
name but begin with "unknowns." Files include juror's signatures
and may contain small amounts of correspondence.
SG 4. Justice of the Peace

Most criminal and civil cases are on microfilm, but some are originals. Precinct
One criminal cases are filed alphabetically. On the same reel are
civil cases, 1882-1927, from different precincts. Files also include
a Justice of the Peace criminal docket book, 1901-1913.
SG 5. Recorder
Townsite filings. 1878-1910. Fraction c.f. (1

Petitions (applications) for townsites. Records include all papers
for establishing the towns of Casa Grande, Hastings, Florence, Oracle, Pinal
City and Stilesville. Arranged by town name.
SG 7. Superintendent of Schools
Teachers' registers. 1910-1952. Fraction c.f. (6

Town of Superior teachers' registers, 1910-1952, are arranged alphabetically
by year. Within some of the registers are Territorial School registers
of monthly attendance.
School census marshal's reports. 1885-1926. 1

Not all districts are represented and there are no records for some years. Arranged
chronologically.
Record book. 1881-1913. Fraction c.f. (1

This volume lists the public school districts in operation on January 1,
1881, and notes district boundaries. New districts are described
as they are organized. Starting on page 101 are Superintendent notes
of events. In back of the book are accounts, 1905-1906, for funds.
Superintendents' general files. 1888-1923. Fraction

The files contain reports on opening and closing schools, certificates
of attendance at teacher's institute, correspondence and petitions to establish
schools or appoint trustees, and apportionment of school funds.
Some teachers' diplomas are found on pages 11-16 of the Pinal County
marriage license book, 1907-1912. See Superior Court, Civil

SG 8. Superior Court
Clerk of the Court. 1876-1955. 3.6

Clerk's records include minutes, 1876-1930; District Court Commissioner
minutes, 1898-1902; court calendars, 1881-1914; dockets, execution, 1887-1918;
issue, 1891-1914, judgment, 1876-1935, and motion, 1887-1924; grand jury
dismissals, 1876; venire, 1876-1955; trial jury, 1914 and 1916; notes, reports,
subpoenas and examination of county departments, 1913-1916; examination of
court reporters, 1915 and 1917; and petitions, 1889-1893.
Minutes, 1876-1930, of the First Judicial District are filed chronologically. The
U.S. District Court minutes of the Second Judicial District, 1898-1902,
are by the Court Commissioner, Daniel C. Stevens, and refer to cases held
before Stevens and signed by him. There are fewer than ten cases, mainly
regarding writs of habeas corpus and orders for injunctions.
Clerk's records also contain District and Superior Court civil and criminal
court calendar, 1881-1914, and Second Judicial District cases, 1886-1895
and 1901-1914. The Second Judicial District Court execution dockets,
1887-1918, are indexed and reverse indexed. Also in the Clerk's records
are issue dockets, 1891-1914, and First Judicial District judgment dockets,
1896-1935, which are indexed.
Grand Jury dismissals, 1876-1919, are filed alphabetically under First Judicial
District, Second Judicial District or Third Judicial District. These
lists, 1876-1955, are for Grand and trial juries, and include qualified elector's
names grouped by towns and arranged chronologically by year. The Grand
Jury of 1913 examined various county offices, both their accounts and their
offices. The examination of candidates for the position of court reporter,
1915 and 1917, contains the findings of the committee.
Petitions include an 1889 Florence petition to build a county courthouse
and a 1892 petition for a Casa Grande block deeded to School District
Four. In 1893, petitioners asked for purchase of water rights
for the Casa Grande townsite.

Civil records include registers of actions, 1876-1932; cases 1-4776, 1876-1929; un-filed
civil case records, 1905; civil and probate exhibits, 1904-1925; land hearing records,
1909-1939; marriage affidavits, 1874-1910; and marriage licenses,
1874-1970. Civil registers of actions, 1876-1932, include First Judicial
District Court and are indexed after 1905.
Superior Court civil cases, 1876-1929, are filed numerically, 1-4776. Civil
and probate exhibits, 1904-1925, for both District and Superior Courts, are
on microfilm and arranged by case number.
Land hearing records, 1909-1939, contain correspondence on homestead
entries and disputed homestead entries. Drawings showing section, township
and range location may be included with the testimony of witnesses. This
grouping contains townsite entries and non-stock raising homesteads. Accounting
of fees paid and receipts are also included.
Marriage affidavits, 1874-1910, are filed by date. Certificates
of marriage are also included. Marriage licenses, 1874-1970,
are double indexed by male/female and female/male.
Criminal Division. 1876-1938. 14 c.f. (7

Records include case files, 1876-1929, and registers of actions, 1876-1939,
1911 and 1929. Criminal cases, 1876-1929, and registers of action,
1876-1938, are arranged chronologically by case number.
Probate Division. 1875-1971. 8 c.f. (8
boxes and 58 rolls of microfilm).
Probate records include minutes, 1877-1931; records of estates, 1875-1937;
case files, 1875-1937; exhibits, 1904-1925; estate registers, 1915-1923;
inventories of estates, 1881-1949; records of wills, 1875-1949; letters of
administration, 1875-1946; letters of guardianship, 1875-1911; records of
insanity, 1879-1929; probate records, 1876-1912; appointment of clerk, 1888;
and naturalization declarations and petitions, 1875-1929. Probate
minutes, 1877-1931, are arranged chronologically and are on microfilm.
The records of estates, 1875-1937, are filed chronologically and indexed. Probate
cases, 1875-1937, are filed by case number. Civil and Probate exhibits,
1904-1925, are arranged by case number. Inventories of estates, 1881-1949,
are on microfilm, filed chronologically and indexed. Records of wills,
1875-1949, are also filed chronologically and indexed. Letters of administration,
1875-1946, are indexed and arranged chronologically. Letters of guardianship,
1875-1911, are indexed.
Records of insanity, 1879-1929 and 1932, are filed alphabetically. These
records also include inquests of lunacy, warrants to arrest, subpoenas and
affidavits. Probate records, 1876-1912, include some habeas corpus. Probate
records also include the appointment of the Clerk of the Probate Court in
March 1888. A box of insanity hearing papers, 1930-1971, for Winnie
Ruth Judd, contains orders, subpoenas, statements, jury records, motions
and correspondence.
Naturalization records from the District and Superior Court, 1875-1929,
include declarations and petitions.
SG 9. Board of Supervisors
Minutes. 1941. Fraction c.f. (2 folders).
Minutes are for one meeting on March 18, 1941, on a resolution allowing Florence
Union High School District One Board of Education to invest sinking
fund money.
Legal records. 1979. Fraction c.f. (1
folder).
This folder contains an Ak-Chin Indian Community agreement with Pinal County
Board of Supervisors for mutual protection and law enforcement assistance
to each other.
Correspondence and reports. 1869-1936. Fraction
c.f. (1 box).
Records include items from the Sheriff and Agricultural Extension Service,
as well as the General Land Office re-survey maps of 1869, 1892 and
1920.
